Mihrimah Sultan Mosque

The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque sits on the highest of Istanbul's seven hills, crowned by a single massive dome that appears to float above two tiers of windows. Built in the fifteen sixties, it was commissioned by Princess Mihrimah, the favorite daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent. The architect Mimar Sinan designed the structure to capture maximum sunlight, flooding the vast, open interior with illumination. He reportedly waited years for the princess to approve his bold, light-filled vision before construction finally began.
