Merdivenli Yokuşu is a narrow, steep street defined by a long, uninterrupted flight of stone stairs that climb the hillside of Balat. Houses press against the steps on both sides, their wooden facades painted in faded ochre, blue, and grey. During the early twentieth century, this path served as a vital artery for the neighborhood’s diverse residents. An old photograph captures a local tailor carrying rolls of fabric up these very stairs, while children played beneath the hanging laundry lines overhead.
