Molla Zeyrek Mosque

The Molla Zeyrek Mosque stands out for its irregular, cascading brick silhouette, a sprawling collection of three former Byzantine churches joined together. Before the city fell to the Ottomans in fourteen fifty-three, this was the Monastery of the Pantokrator. Emperor John the second Comnenus built it as a royal burial site. After the conquest, Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror converted the structure into a mosque and established a madrasa here, where Molla Zeyrek, a renowned scholar, taught students for many years.
