The Şehzade Mosque is defined by its perfectly symmetrical courtyard and the cascading tiers of half-domes that surround its central dome. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned this site in fifteen forty-three to honor his favorite son, Prince Mehmed, who died of smallpox at age twenty-one. Architect Mimar Sinan considered this his first true masterpiece, testing structural techniques here that he would later perfect at the Blue Mosque. The tomb of the prince remains inside the garden, decorated in vivid Iznik tiles.
