Mausoleum of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent

The octagonal structure of Suleyman the Magnificent’s tomb stands beneath a central dome supported by eight columns. Mimar Sinan designed this funerary complex in fifteen sixty-six, shortly after the sultan died. Inside, the tomb features tiles from Iznik with floral patterns and verses from the Quran. Suleyman requested that his tomb be modest compared to the massive mosque next door. He chose this specific high ground to overlook the city and the Golden Horn, keeping his presence permanent in Istanbul’s skyline.
