The Boukoleon Palace features a row of arched stone windows overlooking the Sea of Marmara, remains of the once-grand imperial residence of the Byzantine emperors. During the tenth century, the emperor Theophilos adorned the facade with a marble lion capturing a bull, which gave the palace its name. Crusaders breached these very walls in twelve oh four, ending centuries of imperial control. Today, the salt air and passing trains rattle the ancient marble, leaving only these skeletal arches as evidence of its former glory.
