The German Fountain features an octagonal pavilion topped by a golden dome supported by eight porphyry columns. Kaiser Wilhelm the Second gifted this structure to Sultan Abdulhamid the Second in nineteen hundred to commemorate his second visit to Istanbul. The fountain was fabricated in Germany, shipped in pieces, and reassembled on the Hippodrome. During the construction, workers discovered Byzantine-era cisterns beneath the site, forcing them to adjust the foundation. It remains a distinct example of neo-Byzantine architecture set amidst classical ruins.
