Binbirdirek Cistern

historic

The Binbirdirek Cistern features two stacked columns in each row, held together by a marble ring, creating a ceiling height double that of similar underground structures in the city. Built in the fourth century, the tank once held eighty thousand cubic meters of water supplied by the Valens Aqueduct. Philoxenos, a Roman senator, commissioned the project to provide a private reserve for his palace. Dry for centuries, the space now echoes with the sound of footsteps on stone floors.
