Egyptian Bazaar

The Egyptian Bazaar holds an L-shaped floor plan topped by a series of cascading lead-covered domes. Constructed in sixteen sixty-four, the building served as the final destination for camel caravans arriving from Cairo. Proceeds from the spice trade inside funded the upkeep of the New Mosque nearby. During one night in sixteen eighty-eight, a massive fire ripped through the structure, consuming the spices and textiles stored within. Merchants rebuilt the bazaar, and its timber roof eventually gave way to the current masonry arches.
