Scotland Yard

The name Scotland Yard actually comes from a piece of medieval geography rather than any law enforcement history. Long before police officers walked these streets, the land belonged to the Kings of Scotland. When they traveled to London, they stayed in a palace complex on this site, which became known as Great Scotland Yard. By the time the Metropolitan Police arrived in eighteen twenty-nine, the royal lodgings were long gone, but the name of the courtyard where the force established its first headquarters stuck. Even as the department moved offices over the decades, the name traveled with them, cementing its status as an international shorthand for London policing.
