Statue of Henry Irving

The bronze statue you see before you commemorates Sir Henry Irving, a titan of the Victorian stage who transformed how the world viewed the acting profession. Unveiled in 1910, this monument was funded directly by the theater community to honor the man who became the first actor ever to receive a knighthood. While many public figures of his era were cast in heroic or mythological poses, the sculptor Thomas Brock chose a remarkably grounded approach. He depicted Irving wearing a real, tailored frock coat, sourced specifically from the company ledgers of the renowned Savile Row tailor Henry Poole and Company.
