The Mud Soldier

The Mud Soldier was a temporary, haunting installation that once occupied a space in the heart of Trafalgar Square. It was composed entirely of sand and actual mud collected from the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium. Artists Damian and Killian Van Der Velden designed the sculpture to slowly disintegrate when exposed to the elements, visually echoing the way soldiers were swallowed by the treacherous quagmire of the First World War.
