Wyndham's Theatre opened in November 1899 with a grand gesture from its founder, the famous actor-manager Charles Wyndham. On the opening night, he donated the entire box office proceeds of four thousand pounds to charity. This act set a tone for a venue that would become a cornerstone of the West End, managed by a man who had transitioned from a career as a surgeon to one of the most celebrated performers of his generation.
