Parliament Square

Parliament Square began as a drastic measure to clear away a chaotic network of narrow, overcrowded streets that once pressed against the Palace of Westminster. Following a massive fire in eighteen thirty-four, architect Sir Charles Barry sought to bring order and scale to the area, resulting in the formal square completed in eighteen sixty-eight. This project intentionally carved out an open, ceremonial stage to frame the newly rebuilt seat of British government.
