Statue of Millicent Fawcett

monument

The statue of Millicent Fawcett stands in Parliament Square as the first monument to a woman in this historic space. Before its unveiling in April 2018, every one of the eleven statues in the square depicted a man. The campaign for this addition began when activist Caroline Criado Perez went for a run on International Women's Day and realized the complete absence of female figures in the area. Her efforts, supported by a petition signed by thousands, successfully challenged the long-standing demographic of the square's monuments.
