The Rosemary Branch stands as a survivor of the industrial era, tracing its origins back to a local inn documented on maps as early as fifteen ninety-four. Its name originates from the political followers of the Leveller movement in the sixteen forties, who famously wore sprigs of rosemary in their hats as they gathered at this meeting place. By the mid-nineteenth century, it had transformed from a tavern into a bustling entertainment destination known for balloon ascents, pony racing, and tightrope walking, effectively positioning itself as a northern rival to the famous Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens.
