London Fever Hospital

The London Fever Hospital in Islington began its life at this Liverpool Road site in 1848, but it was greeted with intense hostility by local residents. Fearing the facility would become a deadly pest house, the neighborhood organized loud protests to block its construction. Their opposition proved unsuccessful, and the hospital opened, eventually operating for over a century before closing its doors in 1975. The buildings were later converted into residential housing, successfully preserving the original Victorian facades that once caused such widespread alarm.
