Bunhill Fields Burial Ground

Bunhill Fields takes its name from a grim, forgotten feature of the London landscape. In the sixteenth century, the authorities demolished the charnel house at Saint Pauls Cathedral, a structure that had held centuries of accumulated skeletal remains. More than one thousand cartloads of these bones were transported to this site and dumped in a massive, haphazard pile. The mound became so prominent that it was known as Bone Hill, and it was so elevated that three windmills were later constructed directly on top of the pile to capture the breeze.
