Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station exists because of a romantic coincidence in the life of author J.K. Rowling. Her parents first met on a train departing from this very station for Scotland, a memory that anchored the location in her mind as the ideal departure point for her protagonist’s magical journey. While the platform is a fixture in the wizarding world, the real station was chosen for its personal significance and its direct rail line toward the north.
