Finsbury Health Centre

Finsbury Health Centre stands as a landmark of mid twentieth century social reform, opening in nineteen thirty eight to provide free, comprehensive medical care a full decade before the establishment of the National Health Service. It was commissioned by the local borough council under the leadership of Dr. Chuni Lal Katial, a physician and politician who sought to centralize scattered, inefficient services for a community struggling with poverty, overcrowding, and rampant diseases like tuberculosis. The building was designed by the architect Berthold Lubetkin and his firm, Tecton, who were pioneers in bringing avant-garde, modernist principles to public service architecture in Britain.
