All Saints, Margaret Street

All Saints Margaret Street is a landmark of High Victorian Gothic architecture, hidden in plain sight behind the busy shops of Oxford Street. You will notice it by the small, secluded courtyard that separates the building from the surrounding urban bustle. Architect William Butterfield designed this space in 1850 to be a model church, specifically intended to influence the direction of church building across the country. He chose to build with red brick rather than the then-standard grey stone, at the time a radical architectural choice that he believed gave the material a new, elevated sense of dignity.
