Beaconsfield (gallery)

Beaconsfield Gallery occupies the shell of a former Victorian Ragged School. These schools were established in the mid nineteenth century to provide free education to the most destitute children of the neighborhood. The institution took its name from the rugged, poverty-stricken appearance of the children who attended. Much of the original structure was demolished in the early twentieth century to make room for railway expansion, leaving the remaining wing that now serves as this arts space.
