Vauxhall Gardens

Vauxhall Gardens began in the seventeenth century as a simple rural tavern called the New Spring Garden. It was originally an unassuming place for walks and refreshments, but it eventually transformed into the most famous pleasure garden in London. By the eighteenth century, the site became a hub of music and spectacle under the management of Jonathan Tyers. He turned the grounds into an elaborate fairyland that defined the social life of the era. Visitors could wander through winding paths illuminated by thousands of oil lamps, creating a glowing, nocturnal atmosphere that seemed to suspend reality.
