Newport Street Gallery

Before these walls housed contemporary art, they were home to the dramatic craft of the London stage. In nineteen thirteen, these structures were purpose built as scenery painting studios for the West End theatre industry. Artists worked here on expansive canvases that would eventually serve as the backdrops for massive theatrical productions. You can still see the ghosts of this history in the proportions of the rooms, designed originally to accommodate massive painted sets that needed to be viewed from a distance.
