In January 1928, a powerful surge caused the River Thames to overflow its banks, devastating the area and claiming fourteen lives. The government demolished the remaining, ruined structures to clear the land for a new era of grand institutional construction. This redevelopment paved the way for the massive Portland stone edifice that stands before you today.
