Farringdon Road drill hall

The Farringdon Road drill hall stands tucked away at the end of a narrow carriage way, a quiet witness to the late nineteenth century fear of foreign invasion. It was constructed in eighteen eighty-eight as the headquarters for the Second City of London Rifle Volunteer Corps, a group largely composed of local printers who trained here to defend the capital. You can still spot the original crest of the volunteer corps above the building's portico, a remnant of its early years as a dedicated military training site.
