Canada Memorial

The Canada Memorial is a striking monument fashioned from red granite sourced directly from the Canadian Shield. Unveiled by Queen Elizabeth the Second in 1994, it honors the nearly one million Canadians and Newfoundlanders who served alongside British forces during the two World Wars. The structure consists of two angled, monumental slabs separated by a narrow central walkway, symbolizing the joint participation of the two nations. A thin sheet of water continuously flows over the sloped granite surface, evoking the imagery of maple leaves drifting down a stream. Embedded into the stone are over five hundred bronze maple leaves that seem to float within this aquatic display. At the center of the walkway, a compass rose is precisely oriented toward Halifax, Nova Scotia, the primary port from which thousands of Canadian service members embarked on their journey to Europe.
