Memorial Gates, London

The Memorial Gates stand at the Hyde Park Corner end of Constitution Hill as a tribute to five million volunteers from the Indian subcontinent, Africa, and the Caribbean. These men and women served with British forces during the First and Second World Wars, yet their contributions remained largely unrecognised by national monuments for decades. Opened in two thousand two by Queen Elizabeth the Second, the site features four towering pillars of Portland stone, each topped with a bronze urn that holds a gas flame lit on days of national remembrance.
