Royal Panopticon of Science and Art

The Royal Panopticon of Science and Art was an ambitious attempt to house Victorian progress under one roof, designed as a Moorish-style palace on the eastern side of Leicester Square. When it opened in eighteen fifty-four, it functioned as a showcase for the most cutting-edge inventions and artistic achievements of the time. For the price of a single shilling, visitors could experience demonstrations of electricity, gaze at an illuminated fountain that reached the height of the roof, or view complex scientific machinery. The building itself was intentionally flamboyant, featuring minarets and intricate tile work that stood in stark contrast to the surrounding architecture. Inside, the walls were often covered with rotating displays of exotic wallpaper and Arabic script to provide a sensory experience as much as an educational one.
