County Hall

County Hall was built on an industrial site that once held flour mills, wharves, and small factories. When construction crews began excavating the riverbank in the early twentieth century, they unearthed a thirty-eight-foot-long Roman boat that had been buried in the mud for nearly seventeen hundred years. This ancient vessel serves as a buried reminder of the deep, layered history hidden beneath the Portland stone of this Edwardian Baroque landmark.
