Before this space became a military parade ground, it served as the tiltyard for the Palace of Whitehall. During the reign of Henry the Eighth, this area was the site of elaborate jousting tournaments and royal celebrations. It functioned as an enclosed arena for the court, placing the theater of combat at the very center of royal life.
