Candlestick Point State Recreation Area

Candlestick Point State Recreation Area sits on land that was never meant to be a park. During the Second World War, the federal government filled in this portion of the San Francisco Bay, intending to construct a massive shipyard for the war effort. When the conflict ended, the project was abandoned, leaving behind a blank, barren stretch of landfill that eventually became a local dumping ground for trash.
