The ferryboat Santa Rosa began its life in nineteen twenty-seven as a trailblazer on the San Francisco Bay. It holds the distinction of being the first steel-hulled, diesel-electric ferry to ever operate in these waters. When it first launched, the vessel was a vital link for the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, shuttling passengers and automobiles between San Francisco and the Sausalito terminal, which served as a gateway to the far northern reaches of California.
