The Tadich Grill is marked by its forest-green exterior and the crowded, white-tablecloth interior visible through the front glass. It started as a humble coffee stand on a San Francisco wharf in eighteen forty-nine, run by three Croatian immigrants. During the Gold Rush, they served fresh seafood grilled over mesquite charcoal to miners fresh off the ships. John Tadich eventually bought the business, giving it his name, and the restaurant has stayed in the family or with loyal employees ever since.
