International Hotel (San Francisco)

The International Hotel is a three-story brick structure with a flat roof that sits on the corner of Kearny and Jackson. It housed generations of Filipino and Chinese laborers who worked in the city during the mid-twentieth century. In nineteen seventy-seven, after a long legal battle, the city evicted the residents to clear the land for a parking garage. The residents and their supporters blocked the entrances, creating a standoff that remains one of the most intense housing protests in California history.
