United States Customhouse (San Francisco)

The United States Customhouse in San Francisco features massive, rock-faced granite blocks harvested from the Raymond quarry. It stands as a heavy, imposing square of neoclassical architecture that survived the nineteen oh six earthquake and fire without structural damage. While the city burned, the building served as a sanctuary for federal records and thousands of citizens who gathered inside its fireproof walls. Today, federal agencies still operate behind the stone, just as they have since the building opened in nineteen eleven.
