Grace Cathedral rises on the summit of Nob Hill with its massive, French Gothic spires and a pair of heavy bronze doors. These doors are direct casts from Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise in Florence, showing scenes from the Old Testament in deep relief. The cathedral sits on land once held by the tycoon Charles Crocker, whose mansion burned to the ground during the earthquake of nineteen oh six. His widow donated the charred property to the Episcopal Church for this building.
