Napier Lane

Napier Lane is a narrow wooden boardwalk tucked behind the houses of Telegraph Hill, lined with small cottages that have no street access. In the eighteen seventies, the lane housed the laborers who worked at the nearby docks. When the city tried to condemn the path to install modern sewers and roads, the residents resisted by installing their own pipes and maintaining the path themselves. These cottages remain private residences, still accessible only by the original wooden stairs and foot traffic.
