Exploratorium

museum

The Exploratorium was founded in 1969 by Frank Oppenheimer, a physicist who spent a decade as a cattle rancher after being blacklisted during the McCarthy era. He believed that traditional science education failed to capture the wonder of discovery, so he launched this museum with no formal fanfare by simply unlocking the doors of the Palace of Fine Arts. He wanted visitors to feel the raw energy of creation, often leaving the workshop areas exposed so people could smell sawdust and watch exhibits being built in real time. Today, the museum occupies a pair of historic piers on the San Francisco waterfront, serving as a permanent laboratory where art, science, and human perception collide.
