Meiggs Wharf

Meiggs Wharf began as the ambitious project of Henry Meiggs, a businessman who sought to transform the city's shipping industry in the eighteen fifties. He constructed a massive, L-shaped pier extending up to two thousand feet into the bay, which was an extraordinary feat of engineering for the time. Meiggs hoped this long structure would capture the lucrative lumber trade and stimulate development in what is now the North Beach area. Despite his grand intentions, the wharf faced immense challenges from the start because the strong currents and rough waters in this specific location made it difficult for ships to dock safely.
