Umbrella Alley emerged from the stillness of the pandemic in twenty-twenty. When local tourism businesses shuttered, the owner of a nearby tour company looked for a way to bring life back to his corner of Fisherman's Wharf. He began painting the ground with bright, retro-inspired patterns and invited local artists to transform the surrounding walls into an outdoor gallery. This project provided a creative outlet for muralists who had lost their usual work during the closures. It quickly evolved from a spontaneous spark of activity into a dedicated space for public art that continues to grow today.
