Eureka (ferryboat)

The Eureka is the largest wooden-hulled ship remaining in the world. Built in eighteen ninety, this massive ferryboat originally served as a floating bridge, carrying entire railroad freight cars across the San Francisco Bay on tracks embedded directly into its main deck. Because it was designed to be double-ended, the vessel could shuttle back and forth between terminals without the need to turn around, a crucial efficiency for the busy transit schedules of the late nineteenth century.
