Macondray Lane

Macondray Lane serves as a quiet, tree-lined sanctuary hidden away on the steep slopes of Russian Hill. This pedestrian-only pathway feels entirely removed from the bustle of the city, shielded by a canopy of eucalyptus, ferns, and Japanese maples. While it now appears as a picturesque enclave, the lane originated as a simple right-of-way that first appeared on a United States Geological Survey map in 1859. Its name honors Frederick William Macondray, a nineteenth-century sea captain and pioneer merchant who became a major importer of Chinese tea into San Francisco.
