Pier 33

Pier 33 was completed in 1919 and holds a distinctive record in maritime history as the first pier on the Pacific Coast ever designed to berth a battleship. In the mid-nineteen twenties, the Navy took advantage of this deep-water capability, docking two of its massive warships here for extended stays. The transit shed at the pier was also a notable piece of early twentieth-century engineering, as it was one of the first in the city to feature skylights that drew natural daylight directly into the working cargo areas.
