The ground beneath your feet at Marina Green exists only because of the 1906 earthquake. Before that catastrophe, this entire area was a tidal marsh and a collection of sand dunes that were impossible to build upon. In the aftermath of the citys destruction, authorities used the wreckage and rubble from collapsed buildings as landfill to reshape the waterfront. This massive effort turned unstable marshland into the solid foundation you walk on today.
