Fort Mason Park

Fort Mason occupies a prominent rocky promontory that has commanded the entrance to the bay for centuries. Long before it became a park, Spanish colonists established a military presence here in the late eighteenth century, recognizing the site as an ideal vantage point to control the passage between the mainland and Alcatraz. Its strategic position turned this ground into a focal point for successive military powers, evolving from a Spanish battery into a pivotal American coastal defense post.
