Russian Hill-Macondray Lane Historic District

The Russian Hill-Macondray Lane Historic District is a narrow, wooded pedestrian enclave that functions as a quiet forest path amidst the dense city. This passage was originally known as Lincoln Street, but its name was changed around 1912 to honor Frederick W. Macondray, a pioneer San Francisco merchant who famously brought Zinfandel vines to California in the 1850s. While most of the original homes here were destroyed during the 1906 earthquake and fire, they were rebuilt within just three years. The district remains a protected slice of history, preserving the vernacular architecture that characterized the hill in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
