The Guardhouse

The small building standing before you served as the original gateway to military authority at Fort Mason. In the nineteenth century, this guardhouse functioned as both a shelter for sentries and a holding cell for soldiers who broke the post’s strict disciplinary codes. Guards here worked grueling twenty-four-hour shifts, patrolling the grounds and monitoring prisoners between two-hour rotations of duty. Inside, the space was divided into a guardroom for the soldiers on watch and a series of light and dark cells reserved for those considered the most difficult offenders. Discipline at the time was often severe, and the guardhouse represented the rigid, uncompromising side of military life that defined this post for over a century.
