The Witch House

The Witch House features black, gabled wood and a steep, overhanging roof that looms over Essex Street. It remains the only structure in Salem with direct ties to the sixteen ninety-two witchcraft trials. Judge Jonathan Corwin purchased the house in sixteen seventy-five and presided over the hearings that sent nineteen innocent people to the gallows. He lived here for over forty years, and the heavy, dark timber frame suggests the austere life of a magistrate deeply involved in the trials.
