Weehawken Pier

The Weehawken waterfront was once the home of a massive intermodal transit hub known as the Weehawken Terminal, which opened in eighteen eighty-four. This complex functioned as the primary endpoint for the West Shore Railroad and featured sixteen passenger train tracks, five ferry slips, and extensive freight yards. For decades, it served as a vital gateway for passengers and cargo moving between New Jersey and Manhattan before the widespread use of tunnels and bridges made such ferry-to-rail transfers obsolete. The terminal finally closed its doors in nineteen fifty-nine, bringing an end to over two hundred fifty years of ferry service history at this location.
